A Glimpse of the Columbia
Fine Art by artist Gayle Pedemonte - Description: Oil on Panel. I drove up to Maupin this summer to meet my family on a camping trip. I combined it with a visit to the Mary Hill Museum. I had to pull over on the way back to take a better look at those cliffs on the other side of the river. It was hazy and smokey, with a just little sun. The colors were muted but the shapes of the dark cliffs marching along were engaging.

When I start out on a new canvas, I have no plan or preconceived notion of what I am doing. I just start putting layers on the canvas, letting my inner child loose with freedom of expression. At some point a painting will speak to me and I'll see what it wants to be. This painting was headed towards being a new one in my racial justice series. Then one session I got out the pinks and white hues and I started to see the most brilliant sky forming. Alas the painting had changed course and a new landscape was formed. If you look closely, you'll see the words of some of my early layers. A mystical landscape to remember those of the past.

I was invited to paint there, as they had an open house fundraiser. The lavender was beautiful, but I was really taken with the bee boxes. The owner had painted them, lined them up at the edge of the field. The sun came and hit the colorful boxes. My favorite colors, for flowers, clothes, everything.
