Steve and Calisse Browne, Metal Memories

Calisse Browne is originally from Indiana where she attended Indiana University studying business. Her professional career started as a consultant computer programmer, working for various corporations in Indiana and Colorado. Her career transitioned from computer programming to internal audit work for a major Bell company. She moved from the Bell company to a major healthcare company where she obt...ained her Masters in Healthcare Management and became a Staff Vice President of Internal Audit. She recently retired from the corporate world to the life of an artist.

Steve Browne was born in South Africa but came to the United States to attend college. He never returned to South Africa. After completing a Ph.D. in Criminology, he worked as a criminal justice researcher for the City of Denver and then moved into executive management in the Denver Department of Safety which is a combined Police, Sheriff and Fire department. In addition to creating artwork, he now teaches criminology at Regis University.

They started their copper art by creating flame-painted copper jewelry. Calisse started working with metal by taking jewelry metal-smithing classes at the Denver School of Metal Arts. She initially worked with silver but added copper to the metals she enjoyed using. One evening, Steve drove her to an enameling on copper class where Calisse bought him a seat in the class. He enjoyed the class and began working with enamel and copper.

About three years ago, an interest in painting larger copper wall art pieces developed. This prompted Calisse and Steve to take a class to acquire a better understanding of the physics of fire painting. They went to the Ozark Folk Center in Arkansas where they learned from the couple that discovered flame-painted copper many years ago . The better understanding of the art's form science motivated Calisse and Steve to experiment with various torches and techniques to transfer the process used on jewelry to larger copper wall pieces. With much experimentation, practice, and testing of various torches, they successfully transferred the learned jewelry techniques to larger wall art pieces.

"We are very fortunate in that we work well together and complement each other's abilities. Every piece is touched by both of us. Yet, we can independently perform every component of the fire painting process. We brainstorm each piece and, through discussion and experimentation, push our understanding of working with copper to enhance our art. There is much satisfaction from collaborating on each piece."

Attitude Fine Art by artist Steve and Calisse Browne, Metal Memories - Description: This piece was created with color in mind and to follow where the copper wanted to go versus the artist forcing the copper to cooperate with the artist's design intent. The end result is a dynamic piece of art with 'attitude'.

Flame painted copper is both an art and a science. The art is the artist negotiation with the copper to create the design the artist has in their mind. The science is understanding the oxidation process and developing a methodology that allows the artist to consistently control the color and technique for 'painting' the copper with a torch. Up to 14 colors can be achieved using only a propane/oxygen torch (no chemicals or paint).
