There is a very important word in Danish, hygge (hoogah), that does not translate directly into English. The closest we can come is "cozy". Hygge is an important concept in Denmark where the winters are long and dark. Hygge is about creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for friends and family. Penny Forrest tries to capture this in her work by creating cozy and inviting spaces for viewers to di...ve into.

Penny finds she is increasingly inspired by the everyday and ordinary. She seeks beauty in the mundane tasks and clutter of daily life - the little things we take for granted can mean the most and she tries to share that vision with other like-minded souls.

Sundays With Billie Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: I think someone who likes to spend Sundays puttering with her plants while listening to Billie Holiday on an old Victrola would like this space. This was a deeper exploration into pattern.

The Best Weekends Were Spent at the Cabin Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: Another piece where I push the envelope with patterns. I also got to make a little fabric art (the piece over the couch) even if it's just in paint. A very cozy room I can visit in my mind.

The Happy Monk - At Shangri LaLa we garden in bikinis, if the mood strikes us Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: This piece is part of the Shangri LaLa series inspired by my daughter's home. High in the Sierra foothills she lives a creative and busy life filled with art, music, and good food. For many years she lived completely off the grid using solar panels and wind for electricity and wood for heat. She grows most of her own food and is a fantastic cook. Her house is filled with art, funky antiques and eclectic clutter scattered artfully everywhere you look and interspersed with plants and flowers from the garden. Every time I visit I find something to inspire me.

Days are busy at Shangri LaLa. There are always plants and crops to be watered and gardens to be tended. Sometimes we do that in bikinis - if the mood strikes us.
