Michelle Greeven

Michelle Greeven is a glass artist living and working in Corvallis, Oregon. She starts each day in her studio with the doors thrown open to a view of the Willamette Valley. She is experiencing a season of change in her life, as new beginnings are unfolding. With each day, and each new piece, she seeks to learn something new, notice what has been there all along, and embrace what is just coming int...o view.

While Michelle casually engaged in making art all throughout her life, she is new to embracing art as a profession. From a painting she was asked to sell to a teacher in her youth, to an award-winning pastel she showed at the state fair, Michelle has always been recognized by her community as an artist but it is only recently, as her children have left home to adventure into lives of their own, that she has shifted her time and attention to an intentional art practice.

Michelle is now recognizing and embracing her voice as an artist, evolving from classes focused on technique to coursework exploring process. Over that time, she has made a difficult and lengthy shift in scaling back her full-time career in order to allow her to step more fully into art making. Time spent in the studio now outpaces time spent in the office. Introspection and reflection bring memories of growing up in the outdoors, encouraging her to make art that brings the outside in. It is all quite thrilling, and she is energized by the process that is unfolding, and now, with just a bit of trepidation, she is learning how to share the art and the unique view that is emerging, with you.

"I make my work to recover a sense of discovery and freedom, to "home in a new rhythm" as I'm transitioning to the next phase of life. The process of exploration opens the door to a sense of timelessness, a melting away of worries and pressure to attend to outdated responsibilities.

I am energized by the inspiration of nature and glass. Kiln-forming allows glass to flow, to transform in shape and texture. As the pieces move toward completion, there is often a fastidious finishing step that requires considerable nurturing. Grounded and illuminated, the finished forms cast intricate pools of color, inviting you to explore and discover for yourself."
