Fine Art by artist Linda Jerome - Description: Originally, I made a flower boat following a pattern from a ceramics magazine. It came out well, but when I saw it with flowers, I thought how fun it would be to see a small bird looking out from among the stems.

One of my hobbies is bird watching - mostly at our house. I've become very aware of them, flitting around in our bushes, scratching on the ground and nesting in unexpected places. It's another dimension of gardening that I love. Each of the flower boats I make is unique. Each bird is also unique. Their gesture and positions are based on real types of birds, but I use the glaze generically - using loose strokes because I think it helps with the feeling of the bird in motion.

Birds and flowers are two joys of life that I'm looking to highlight in these Flower Boats. My intent was to make it easy to put flowers, or stems into the holders for a quick arrangement that is appealing and whimsical. Adding frogs to the Flower Boat pots has been another delight for me. I see small bright green frogs in my yard often - another form of life in the ecosystem that indicates things are healthy.
